Education has been an important part of the work Ingleton Wood has carried out over the last 30-40 years. Although the types of client have changed together with funding arrangements, our teams have stayed ahead of the curve embracing new developments from central government in order that we can continue to support our diverse client base.
This client base ranges from nursery and pre-school provision to some of the region’s leading universities. We undertake a range of types and scale of project, from small survey commissions to large new build schemes of both regional and national importance.
We support schools making the transition to academy and multi-academy trust (MAT) status as well as attracting both new academy and academy trust clients. We are the preferred partner of over 200 academies assisting them with their bids to the ESFA for CIF (ACMF) funding. In these rounds we have been hugely successful obtaining funding for projects ranging from vital maintenance works to whole block replacement and expansion schemes. We also assist MAT’s with the correct allocation and use of School Condition Allocation (SCA) funding. This starts with condition surveys and planned maintenance programmes to ensure there is a good understanding of the estates construction and condition alongside consideration of an overall masterplan and strategy. This enables the identification, prioritisation and risk scoring of capital projects to consider the various impacts of the project and the potential hazards should work be delayed or deferred.
Our work continues with local authorities and London boroughs where we maintain a large number of framework commissions covering all aspects of professional and construction consultancy. This includes working directly for local authorities and with contractors on regional and national frameworks. These relationships together with those of large Further Education and Higher Education institutions provide exciting opportunities across all of our disciplines.
Our work within the Higher Education sector spans over 25 years with some of the leading Colleges and Universities in the country. Across all our clients, the requirement to maintain stock and deliver exemplar architecture is paramount in attracting new students and promoting universities.

Our relationships with independent schools in the private sector bears resemblance to that of the state system. Although the drivers and the need for buildings vary, the requirement to maintain stock and deliver exemplar architecture is paramount in attracting new pupils and their families. Ingleton Wood remains a popular choice with many independent schools owing to our vast experience in delivering education buildings.
Whether your need is isolated to a small survey or you require assistance with respect to a large multi-million pound project we can assemble a team to suit your requirements. Our interest is in building long term relationships with educational establishments where these clients return to us time after time due to the quality of our service.
We always start with sustainability as a primary design objective, while understanding the financial challenges that face all educational establishments. We can help deliver energy or carbon savings – or both – and can help you to define your brief to meet strategic goals. We are used to working with Zero Carbon targets, LETI design approaches and many others, defined by the education authorities and higher education clients we work with. Where appropriate we can help you to apply for LCSF and PSDS funding and can deliver real projects as well as high level feasibility studies.

“Our new building has delivered everything we hoped for and provides a calm, versatile environment for everyone. Having the opportunity to work closely with the team throughout the design and implementation stages has enabled us to create a structure which kept the children at the centre. Careful consideration to every aspect has resulted in an expansion which works harmoniously with the existing building and school grounds.
Reflecting the ethos of the school and how it operates, the building was developed collaboratively, to deliver the design brief on every level. Through a creative approach to the internal configuration, spaces have been created which support and enhance teaching and learning. With the use of internal glazing, around a shared space, a sense of connection between classes is fostered, whilst enabling the teaching rooms to be quiet and distraction free. The overall feel is of light, space and community.
A favourite place for everyone is the central atrium, which is used for group activities, reading and socialising. It also doubles as a library, large meeting space, dance and drama studio, and even as an indoor athletics hall on rainy days! The children love everything about the building. They are intrigued by the cladding at the main entrance, which changes colour as the light alters throughout the day and particularly enjoy using the high tech washrooms.
Everything, from the colour schemes to the external landscaping, has been planned together. We have felt equal partners throughout the process and have worked seamlessly with our architects, Ingleton Wood, and the team from Herts County Council, with the views of children and staff taken into account throughout. The project has been a privilege to be part of.”
Liz Pollard, Headteacher, Codicote School
“The College has valued the professional input that Ingleton Wood brought to this project. They quickly understood our objectives and what we wanted to achieve from this specialist project.
It was particularly challenging to deliver this project during the Covid pandemic but Ingleton Wood supported us with ensuring everyone in the professional team remained focused on meeting deadlines.
We are really pleased with the overall finish of Tech Campus and to see students using it as we planned. Ingleton Wood were an important part of helping to make the vision a reality.”
Mary Gleave, Vice Principal, Suffolk New College
“Ingleton Wood has provided us with an excellent full multidisciplinary design service including BREEAM for the Uphall School project, which was a school extension including a sports hall and commercial kitchen with landscaping works. Trevor, and the team produced drawings which were clear, well-coordinated, and easy to understand. Additionally, they were quick to turn around any design changes and are not a claim driven designer contractor. I would recommended them to anybody.”
George Dance MEng (Hons), Quantity Surveyor, Engie
“This is the second project on which I have worked with colleagues at Ingleton Wood and on both occasions have found their service to be excellent. All staff I have worked with are personable and knowledgeable. Communication has been good throughout with quick responses to queries and a proactive approach to any issues that have arisen.
We have worked together as part of a larger project team to deliver two successful projects and as a result I would recommend Ingleton Wood.”
Sarah Bayliss, Milton Keynes Council
“Ingleton Wood have done a great job in creating a fantastic new flexible teaching facility from what was a slightly awkward space. They were easy to work with, listened to our evolving brief and came up with creative solutions to deliver what we needed. The Clinical Simulation Centre has attracted wide praise and is proving to be a fit-for-purpose resource for the development of the future healthcare workforce.”
Paul Newcombe, Head of Nurse Education, University of Roehampton
“We really appreciated your help and support on the project, which was a major factor in meeting the deadline for completion, and continue to receive praise from teachers and parents (and pretty much everyone who visits the school) for the transformation that has been achieved. I hope you are as pleased with the outcome as we are!”
Karen Sutton, Chief Finance Officer, Harrold Primary School

“We recently employed Ingleton Wood to carry out the M&E services design from the Clients concept proposals to completion on the Innovation Centre at the University of Essex. The project was subject to a great deal of value engineering and Ingleton Wood assisted this process with various design solutions and checking of calculations to ensure compliance to achieve both the SBEM/ BRUKL and BREEAM Very Good requirements.
The whole process worked well between all parties with regular communications being a key factor. We would use Ingleton Wood in the Future.”
Colin Clements, Divisional Director, Bower Fuller
“We were shown around both new builds today and I have to say they are fantastic inside. We are so pleased with them as they have surpassed our expectations. We can’t wait to reveal them to everyone involved and those who will be able to benefit from them in future years.”
Susan Camp, Headteacher, Forres Primary School
“We were very impressed with the level of support provided by all three consultants. Ingleton Wood Martindales listened to everything we said and room data sheets were adjusted accordingly.
The Site Manager from Willmott Dixon was extremely focused on his role and maintaining the daily running of the school was paramount in his planning. He took time out whenever necessary to ensure the school was happy with everything.
The support we received from Hertfordshire County Council through Jackie Aldridge was excellent; she ensured we were fully briefed on all aspects of the work and was instrumental in ensuring that we ended up with an amazing new building.”
Mary Driver, Headteacher, William Ransom Primary School
“Ingleton Wood provided multi-disciplinary project management, contract administration, mechanical & electrical and civil engineering services during the construction of a new twelve classroom modular building at St Thomas More School, Bedford. David Williams, along with the Architect, delivered comprehensive pre-contract services which accurately captured the school’s aspirations for the new building and all the project constraints. This enabled the school to enter into a £1.3m design & build contract with peace of mind. The construction phase was expertly led by Ryan East who, along with the Architect and Contractor, ensured the project was delivered on time, on budget and most importantly, in a safe manner within a live school environment.
The school are thrilled with the new building and we wouldn’t hesitate to use Ingleton Wood’s services again. Their approach to project and contract management is very professional and their attention to detail is reassuring.”
Jane Stringer, Chief Finance Officer at Bedford Catholic Schools, St Francis of Assisi Academies Trust
“When school buildings reach the end of their expected life they can become challenging to manage, but with many competing demands for funding it can still prove tough to get the investment required to make fundamental changes.
Ingleton Wood gathered the various surveys that have been carried out over recent years, performed a detailed analysis of this data and compiled a set of most compelling property concerns. This helped us construct our case for funding and we now feel more informed about the condition of the building.
Throughout the process, Ingleton Wood kept us fully informed of progress and talked us through the report prior final issue. The quality and speed of actions taken helped us maintain traction with this project and we are hopeful for a positive outcome.”
Richard Cole, Head of Estates, Inspiration Trust
“I have worked with the Ingleton Wood team on a number of projects over the last few years. Each and every job has been professionally handled with a depth of understanding and knowledge which is second to none. Works at the College are always complicated because of our Grade 1 listed status but that’s never been an issue to the Ingleton Wood team who take it all in their stride.
They are conscious of our needs and go the extra mile to make sure we get what we need, at the right price and delivered on time by reputable contractors. I have no hesitation in recommending them.”
Fran Difranco, Director of Finance and Resources, Morris Education Trust, Impington Village College
“Ingleton Wood have consistently provided professional and understandable advice to our clients who are unfamiliar with their obligations under the CDM Regulations. Each project provides its own challenges and Ingleton Wood have worked flexibly to meet the needs of each individual client and project.
In addition, whilst working with Ingleton Wood on various projects including Barnet & Southgate College I have found the team to be helpful, responsive and proactive which has allowed us, the client team, to make informed choices to ensure the required BREEAM rating is achieved with minimal difficulty and expense.”
Luke Ridgwell, Project Manager, Fusion Project Management Ltd.

Sean Cooke, Bursar and Clerk to the Governors, St Mary's School, Colchester, Essex
“We gave Ingleton Wood a very challenging brief and they really captured our aspirations from the outset providing a stunning building that will make a real difference to our students. It was a pleasure working with Ingleton Wood team and we are delighted with what has been achieved on a very tight budget.
Not only did we ask Ingleton Wood to deliver a compelling and highly flexible building to accommodate a broad range of specialist student needs, the site we chose was a really complex one. Whilst inclusivity and engagement with the wider college was key, many of our students are extremely vulnerable and protecting their personal wellbeing was paramount. With this in mind Ingleton Wood worked closely with our faculty team to get balance of the layout right.
Given the prominence of the site location, we’re delighted with how the old and new elements work together. The bold use of colour throughout the building is an important part of the PMLD Centre’s programme which aims to encourage visual and physical stimulation.”
Corrienne Peasgood, College Principal, City College Norwich, Norfolk
